The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.
