The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
